CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) conducts national board exams at two stages: Class X (10th) and Class XII (12th). Each subject carries a total of 100 marks. For subjects with practicals (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Biology), the split is typically 70 marks theory and 30 marks practical. For subjects with internal assessment only (e.g., Mathematics, English), it is 80 marks theory and 20 marks internal assessment. Exams are usually held from February to April each year.
Students must score a minimum of 33% in each subject to pass, and this 33% threshold applies separately to both the theory and practical/internal assessment components. For example, in a subject with 80 marks theory and 20 marks internal assessment, a student must score at least 26 out of 80 in theory and at least 7 out of 20 in internal assessment.
CBSE uses a 9-point grading scale: A1 (91–100, grade point 10), A2 (81–90, grade point 9), B1 (71–80, grade point 8), B2 (61–70, grade point 7), C1 (51–60, grade point 6), C2 (41–50, grade point 5), D (33–40, grade point 4), and E1/E2 (below 33, fail). These are positional grades – A1 represents the top 1/8th of passed students in each subject. CGPA is calculated by averaging grade points across subjects, and can be converted to an approximate percentage by multiplying by 9.5.
There is no minimum percentage in Class 12 required just to appear for JEE Main. However, for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions through JEE, candidates in the General/OBC/EWS categories must score at least 75% in Class 12 board exams (or be in the top 20th percentile of their board). SC/ST candidates need a minimum of 65%. The JEE Main score itself is what determines ranking for seat allocation.
To be eligible for NEET, General category students must have scored at least 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in Class 12. OBC/SC/ST candidates need a minimum of 40%, and PwD candidates need 45%. English is a mandatory subject in Class 12 for NEET eligibility, though there is no minimum percentage requirement in English specifically.
CBSE is a national board operating under the central government, following the NCERT curriculum across India. State boards are governed by individual state governments and follow state-specific syllabi. CBSE offers greater uniformity and is often preferred for national-level competitive exams (JEE, NEET) since those exams are closely aligned with the NCERT syllabus. However, state boards are equally valid for university admission and are recognized by all Indian universities.
