StudyPulse supports Regents for Grade 9, Grade 10, Grade 11, Grade 12. Questions and mark schemes are specific to each level so you're always practising the right material for your exams.
A scaled score of 65 out of 100 is the minimum passing score on any Regents exam. Scores are reported on a 1–5 performance-level scale: Level 5 (85–100), Level 4 (76–84), Level 3 (65–75, passing), Level 2 (55–64), and Level 1 (below 55, failing). Raw scores are converted to scaled scores using conversion charts published by NYSED for each exam session.
There are three main diploma types. A Regents Diploma requires passing 5 Regents exams: one in English Language Arts, one in math, one in science, one in US History, and one in Global History. A Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation requires 9 or more exams: three in math (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II), at least two in science (one life science, one physical science), plus ELA and both history exams. Adding an Honors endorsement requires a computed average of 90 or above across all applicable Regents exams.
Most colleges outside New York do not require or specifically review Regents scores. Within New York, SUNY and CUNY institutions may use Regents results for placement decisions or as part of admissions criteria. A score of 75 on the English Regents and 80 on a math Regents is generally considered college-ready by NYSED standards. For selective colleges nationally, SAT/ACT scores, GPA, and AP results carry more weight.
Regents exams are offered three times per year: in January, June, and August. June is the primary administration when most students sit their exams. The January and August sessions provide opportunities to retake failed exams or take exams early. Each session runs over several days, with specific exams scheduled at set times published by NYSED.
Yes. In 2024, the New York Board of Regents voted to end the mandate requiring students to pass Regents exams as a condition of graduation, effective with the class entering ninth grade in 2027–28. The state is transitioning to a new framework called Portrait of a Graduate, which will define graduation requirements through competency-based demonstrations rather than standardized exams. Current students through approximately 2027 will still need to pass Regents exams to graduate.
Yes. Students may retake any Regents exam in a subsequent administration (January, June, or August) to improve their score. The highest score achieved is the one recorded on the transcript. Retaking exams can be worthwhile for students aiming for the Honors endorsement (which requires a 90+ average) or for meeting college-readiness benchmarks at SUNY and CUNY schools.
