Each of the GSAT's subjects – Chinese, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Natural Sciences – is graded on a scale of 0 to 15. Raw scores are converted into this 15-level scale, where a score of 15 typically requires roughly 87% or above on the raw exam. The GSAT is held every January and is the primary exam for the Stars Program and Personal Application admission channels.
The GSAT (學測) covers five core subjects at a level spanning the first two years of senior high school and is used for early-round admissions. The AST (分科測驗, formerly the Advanced Subjects Test) covers individual subjects scored 0–100 and is used for the third admission channel – Admission by Examination and Placement. Since 2022 the AST no longer includes an English section, so GSAT English is the only entrance-exam English score available.
Students have three paths: (I) Stars Program – schools nominate top-ranking students based on internal grades and GSAT results; (II) Personal Application – students apply to up to six departments using GSAT scores, often followed by interviews or portfolio reviews; (III) Admission by Examination and Placement – a score-based channel that combines GSAT and AST results. Most seats are filled through Personal Application.
Under reforms aligned with the 108 Curriculum Guidelines (implemented from 2022), university departments may reference at most four of the five GSAT subjects for screening in the Personal Application channel. This 'five subjects, select four' rule is designed to reduce student pressure and encourage broader learning rather than cramming all five subjects.
Around 120,000 students take the GSAT annually. In 2025 there were approximately 121,000 registered candidates and in 2024 about 120,000. The number has been relatively stable in recent years despite Taiwan's declining birth rate, because the GSAT remains the dominant gateway to university admission.
