Your admission grade combines 60% of your Bachillerato average (nota media de Bachillerato) with 40% of your score on the compulsory phase of the EBAU, giving a base mark out of 10. You must score at least a 4 on the EBAU compulsory phase, and the weighted result must be 5 or higher to pass. On top of that, scores from the optional specific phase can add up to 4 extra points, bringing the theoretical maximum to 14.
The compulsory phase (fase obligatoria) tests four subjects common to all students: Spanish Language and Literature (or co-official regional language), a foreign language, History of Spain or History of Philosophy, and one core modality subject. The specific phase (fase voluntaria) lets you sit up to four additional subjects from your Bachillerato modality. Each specific-phase subject is weighted 0.1 or 0.2 depending on how relevant the university deems it to the degree you’re applying for, and only the two highest weighted scores count.
Real Decreto 534/2024 standardised the EBAU structure across all autonomous communities starting in 2025–26. The key change is a shift toward competency-based evaluation: exams now test your ability to apply knowledge, argue effectively, and solve problems in real-world contexts rather than relying primarily on memorisation. Basic exam structure and scoring remain the same, but the question formats have been updated nationally.
Yes. Your EBAU score is valid for university admission across all of Spain, not just the community where you sat the exam. However, the specific-phase subject weightings (ponderaciones) vary by university and degree programme, so a subject weighted at 0.2 at one university might only be 0.1 at another. Always check the ponderaciones tables published by each university you’re applying to.
Cut-off scores (notas de corte) vary annually by university and demand. Medicine typically requires 13+ out of 14, while programmes like nursing, engineering, and law at top universities generally need 10–12.5. Less competitive programmes may admit with scores around 5–8. The nota de corte is the score of the last admitted student, so it shifts each year based on demand.
Yes. You can retake the compulsory phase or specific-phase subjects in subsequent exam sittings (convocatorias). Spain offers both a June sitting (ordinaria) and a July sitting (extraordinaria) each year. Your highest score in each subject is kept, so retaking carries no risk of lowering your existing grade.
