Norwegian upper secondary schools (videregående skole) use a 1–6 scale for both coursework grades (standpunktkarakter) and exam grades (eksamenskarakter). A 6 means excellent performance, 5 very good, 4 good, 3 fairly good, 2 fair, and 1 poor – with 2 as the minimum passing grade. Both grade types carry equal weight on your transcript (vitnemål) and in your grade-point average.
Your standpunktkarakter is the final course grade set by your teacher based on your demonstrated competence across multiple assessments throughout the year. Your eksamenskarakter is the grade from a single national exam assessed by external examiners. Both appear on your vitnemål and count equally toward your university admission score.
All general-studies students must sit a written exam in Norwegian (hovedmål) at the end of Vg3. Beyond that, most exam subjects are drawn by lottery (trekkfag) – only a portion of students in any given subject actually sit the exam. Which subjects you are drawn for varies by education programme, and you typically find out only a few weeks before the exam period.
Samordna Opptak (the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Admission Service) converts your vitnemål grades into a base score of up to 60 points. You can earn up to 4 bonus points for advanced mathematics, natural sciences, or additional foreign languages, and up to 2 points for completed higher-education credits (1 point per 30 ECTS). Age points may also apply. Your total competition points (konkurransepoeng) determine your ranking in the ordinary admission quota.
You need generell studiekompetanse (general university admission certification), which requires passing core subjects including Norwegian, English, mathematics, natural science, and social studies. Some programmes have specific subject requirements (spesielle opptakskrav) – for example, engineering and medical programmes often require advanced mathematics and physics. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place; admission depends on your competition points relative to other applicants.
Yes. You can retake exams as a privatist (external candidate) through your county’s exam office to improve individual grades on your vitnemål. Improved grades are updated on your transcript and recalculated into your Samordna Opptak score. Many students use this route to boost their competition points for competitive programmes like medicine or law.
