StudyPulse supports IAVE for 11.º ano, 12.º ano. Questions and mark schemes are specific to each level so you're always practising the right material for your exams.
Each national exam is scored on a scale of 0 to 200 points. A score of 95 or above (roughly 9.5 out of 20) on the entrance exam (prova de ingresso) is the minimum required to apply for higher education, even if the student's internal school grade in that subject is a passing 10. The exams are designed and administered by IAVE (Instituto de Avaliação Educativa).
The application grade (nota de candidatura) is calculated on a 0–200 scale using a weighted formula: the secondary school average counts for at least 50%, the entrance exam grades count for at least 45% from 2025/2026, and optional pre-requisites can count up to 15%. Starting from the 2025/26 admissions cycle, students must submit results from two to three national exams as entrance tests, up from the previous requirement of one to three.
National exams are available for around 20 subjects across the 11th and 12th years, including Português, Matemática A, Física e Química A, Biologia e Geologia, Economia A, Geografia A, História A, Filosofia, and several foreign languages. Students typically sit exams in subjects required as entrance tests (provas de ingresso) for their chosen university courses.
To complete secondary education (ensino secundário), students need a final grade of at least 10 out of 20 in each subject. The final subject grade combines the internal school mark (classificação interna) with the national exam result. For subjects with a national exam, the exam typically counts for 25% of the final subject grade for course completion purposes for students entering from 2023/2024.
Yes. IAVE has been progressively moving assessments to digital format. Monitoring of Learning Tests (Provas de Aferição) are already administered digitally. IAVE announced plans for national tests and exams for both basic and secondary students to be carried out on computers, with pilot projects rolling out in selected schools.
Students apply through the Concurso Nacional de Acesso (national access competition) managed by DGES. They rank their preferred courses, and places are allocated based on the nota de candidatura (application grade). Each course at each institution sets its own entrance exam requirements, subject weightings, and minimum scores. Cut-off grades shift annually based on demand and available places.
