StudyPulse supports LC for 5th Year, 6th Year. Questions and mark schemes are specific to each level so you're always practising the right material for your exams.
Each Leaving Cert subject is graded on a percentage scale divided into eight bands. Higher Level papers use grades H1 (90–100%) through H8 (0–29%), and Ordinary Level papers use O1 (90–100%) through O8 (0–29%). The top seven grade bands (1–7) divide the 30–100% range into seven equal 10-percentage-point bands. A grade 8 is awarded for marks below 30%.
Your CAO points are the sum of your six best results from one sitting of the Leaving Certificate. Higher Level grades carry more points: H1 = 100, H2 = 88, H3 = 77, H4 = 66, H5 = 56, H6 = 46, H7 = 37, H8 = 0. Ordinary Level grades carry fewer: O1 = 56, O2 = 46, O3 = 37, O4 = 28, O5 = 20, O6 = 12, O7 = 0, O8 = 0. The maximum possible total is 625 points (six H1s at 100 each, plus 25 bonus points for Higher Level Mathematics).
Students who achieve a grade of H6 or higher in Higher Level Mathematics receive an additional 25 bonus points added to their CAO total. This bonus was introduced to encourage more students to take Mathematics at Higher Level, recognising its importance for STEM fields. The bonus means a H1 in Maths is effectively worth 125 points, pushing the maximum possible CAO score to 625.
Students must sit a minimum of five subjects, including Irish (unless exempt). Most students take seven subjects to maximise their CAO points, since the best six count. LCVP (Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme) Link Modules can count in place of a sixth subject, with a Distinction worth 66 points, a Merit worth 46, and a Pass worth 28.
Students apply to the CAO (Central Applications Office) listing up to ten Level 8 (honours degree) and ten Level 6/7 (ordinary degree/higher certificate) courses ranked by preference. After Leaving Cert results are released in August, the CAO offers places in rounds based on each applicant's total CAO points versus the course's cut-off points. Cut-offs change each year depending on demand and the number of available places.
Points requirements vary significantly. Medicine typically requires 601+ points (including HPAT score). Law at Trinity or UCD usually sits around 500–560 points. Engineering and Business at top universities generally require 400–500 points. Nursing ranges from around 300 to 450 depending on the institution. Cut-off points shift annually – check the CAO website for the most recent round 1 cut-offs.
