The PAES (Prueba de Acceso a la Educación Superior) is Chile’s standardised university entrance exam, administered by DEMRE. It replaced the PSU (Prueba de Selección Universitaria), which was used from 2003 until 2021. The PAES shifted the focus from content recall to competency-based assessment, testing reading literacy and mathematical reasoning rather than subject memorisation.
There are two mandatory tests: Competencia Lectora (Reading Competence – 65 questions, 2 h 30 min) and Competencia Matemática 1 (M1 – 65 questions, 2 h 20 min). There are also elective tests: Ciencias (Science – 80 questions, 2 h 40 min), Historia y Ciencias Sociales (History – 65 questions, 2 h), and Competencia Matemática 2 (M2 – 55 questions, 2 h 20 min). You choose electives based on the requirements of the programmes you want to enter.
PAES scores are reported on a scale from 100 to 1,000 points. The scale is standardised so that the national average sits around 500–600. The national average across mandatory tests typically falls in this range. A perfect score of 1,000 is possible – in 2026 admission, 1,873 students achieved a 1,000 on at least one test.
Admission to universities in the Sistema de Acceso is based on a weighted score combining PAES results, NEM (Notas de Enseñanza Media – your secondary-school grade average), and Ranking (your grades relative to three prior cohorts at your school). Each programme sets its own weightings. You can list up to 20 programmes in order of preference, and seats are allocated automatically based on your weighted score.
NEM (Notas de Enseñanza Media) converts your four-year secondary school grade average into a standardised score on the same 100–1,000 scale as the PAES. Ranking compares your grades against those of three previous graduating cohorts from your same school, rewarding students who outperform their school’s historical average. Both NEM and Ranking are factored into your weighted admission score alongside your PAES results.
Yes. Chile offers two sittings per year: the Regular PAES in early December and a Winter PAES in June. The Winter PAES is voluntary and available to anyone who wants to improve their score. You can use whichever sitting produces the higher result. For the 2026 admission cycle, the Regular PAES was held December 2–3, 2025, with results released on 5 January 2026.
