StudyPulse supports SL GCE for Grade 12, Grade 13. Questions and mark schemes are specific to each level so you're always practising the right material for your exams.
The Z-score standardises your raw A-Level marks so different subjects can be compared fairly. For each subject the formula is (your mark minus the mean mark) divided by the standard deviation of all candidates in that subject. Your composite Z-score is the average of your three subject Z-scores. The result typically falls between −4.0 and +4.0, with zero representing an exactly average performance.
You must obtain at least three S (Simple Pass) grades – meaning 40 marks or above out of 100 – in your chosen subject stream. You also need a minimum of 30% in the Common General Test. Achieving these thresholds makes you eligible for university consideration, but actual admission depends on your Z-score ranking and the seats available in your chosen course.
The University Grants Commission allocates seats through three channels: 40% on all-island merit (top Z-scores regardless of district), 55% through district quotas proportional to each district's population, and 5% reserved for educationally disadvantaged districts such as Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, and Nuwara Eliya. This system aims to balance access for students from areas with fewer educational resources.
Cut-off Z-scores change every year based on the number of applicants and cohort performance. As a rough guide, medicine at top universities like Colombo typically requires a Z-score above 2.0 on the all-island merit list, while engineering programmes generally need above 1.5. District-quota cut-offs can be significantly lower. The UGC publishes official cut-off tables after each admissions cycle.
Subjects are grouped into four streams: Biological Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Physical Science (Combined Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics), Commerce (Accounting, Business Studies, Economics), and Arts (a wide choice including languages, history, and social sciences). You sit three main subjects within your stream plus the Common General Test. Your stream determines which university courses you can apply for.
The GCE O-Level is taken in Grade 11 and covers nine subjects – six compulsory (Sinhala or Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Religion) plus three electives. You need at least six passes including three credits (grade C or above) to qualify for the A-Level programme in Grades 12–13. O-Level results do not factor into the university Z-score, but they are a prerequisite gateway.
