The Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), or Malaysian Higher School Certificate, is an 18-month pre-university programme spread across three semesters (Terms 1, 2 and 3). Students take one compulsory subject – Pengajian Am (General Studies) – plus three or four electives chosen from science, social-science, or language streams. Each semester ends with a centrally set exam worth 60–80% of that semester's marks, with the remaining 20–40% coming from school-based assessment (coursework, projects and practicals).
Each subject is graded on an 11-point scale: A (4.00), A− (3.67), B+ (3.33), B (3.00), B− (2.67), C+ (2.33), C (2.00), C− (1.67), D+ (1.33), D (1.00), and F (0.00). A grade of C or above counts as a 'principal pass', while C− to D is a 'partial pass'. Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is calculated from the average GPA of your four best subjects, including Pengajian Am.
To be eligible for degree programmes at Malaysian public universities (IPTA), you generally need a CGPA of at least 2.00 and principal passes (grade C or above) in three subjects including Pengajian Am. Competitive programmes such as medicine, dentistry and law typically require a CGPA of 3.50 or higher, and specific prerequisite subjects vary by faculty.
UPU (Unit Pengambilan Universiti) is Malaysia's centralised online portal for applying to public universities, polytechnics and community colleges. STPM holders submit up to 12 programme choices (with a minimum of 6). The system ranks applicants by merit – a composite of academic results (STPM CGPA) and co-curricular achievements – and processes choices sequentially: if you are not placed in your first choice the system automatically moves to your second, and so on.
You can resit the Semester 1 (U1) and Semester 2 (U2) examination papers in subsequent sittings to improve your grades. However, Semester 3 (P3) papers cannot be retaken. When you resit, the better of your two grades is used in the CGPA calculation, so there is no penalty for attempting an improvement.
The STPM is widely regarded as the most rigorous pre-university route in Malaysia. Alternatives include the one-year Matriculation (Matrikulasi) programme, foundation courses offered by individual universities, and international qualifications such as A-Levels or the IB Diploma. While Matriculation is shorter, STPM holders compete in their own UPU intake category and the qualification is recognised by universities worldwide, giving it strong currency for both domestic and overseas applications.
