From 2026, candidates sit four subjects: Mathematics and Literature (compulsory) plus two electives chosen from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Informatics, Economics & Law, and Technology. Literature is an essay-format paper (120 minutes); all other subjects use a mix of multiple-choice, true/false, and short-answer questions.
Every subject is scored on a 0–10 scale. A score of 5.0 or above is a pass. Scores of 8.0–10.0 are considered excellent (giỏi) but are rarely achieved across most subjects. You must score at least 1.0 in every exam to be eligible for graduation.
Your graduation score is a weighted formula: 50% comes from your four THPT exam results, and the remaining 50% from your academic transcript (GPA across Grades 10, 11, and 12) plus any bonus points for priority regions or ethnic minorities. You need a combined average of 5.0 or higher across your exam subjects to pass.
Most universities group three THPT subjects into ‘subject blocks’ (tổ hợp) – for example, Block A is Maths–Physics–Chemistry, Block D1 is Maths–Literature–English. Your admission score is typically the sum of your three block scores (max 30) plus any bonus points. Each university sets its own cut-off. Top institutions like VNU Hanoi and VNU Ho Chi Minh City also run their own aptitude tests and combine those with THPT results.
Yes. Since 2015 the THPT has been the primary route, but universities increasingly accept alternative methods: their own entrance exams, competency-based aptitude tests (such as the VNU-HCM đánh giá năng lực test), transcript-based admission using high school GPA, or international qualifications like IELTS scores for certain programs.
Cut-offs vary widely by institution and subject block. Medicine and IT programs at top universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City often require combined block scores of 27–29 out of 30. Engineering and economics programs at flagship universities typically need 24–27. Less competitive programs and regional universities may admit with scores of 15–20. Cut-offs shift annually based on the number of applicants and available places.
