The YKS (Yuksekogretim Kurumlari Sinavi) has two main sessions. The TYT (Temel Yeterlilik Testi) is the Basic Proficiency Test with 120 questions in 165 minutes covering Turkish (40 questions), Basic Mathematics (40), Social Sciences (20), and Science (20). The AYT (Alan Yeterlilik Testi) is the Field Proficiency Test with 160 questions in 180 minutes covering Mathematics, Science, Turkish Literature, History, Geography, and Philosophy. There is also an optional YDT (Foreign Language Test) with 80 questions in 120 minutes, available in English, German, French, Arabic, or Russian.
Your university placement score combines TYT (40%) and AYT (60%) results. On top of that, your high-school diploma grade is converted into a Secondary Education Achievement Score (OBP) by multiplying your diploma grade (out of 100) by 5, producing a score between 250 and 500. Roughly 12% of the OBP is added to your exam-based placement score. The final placement score determines your ranking for university program preferences.
OSYM calculates four weighted placement score types from your TYT and AYT results. SAY (Sayisal) emphasizes mathematics and science for engineering and science programs. SOZ (Sozel) emphasizes Turkish literature, history, and social sciences for humanities and law. EA (Esit Agirlik) is an equal-weight blend of quantitative and verbal scores for business, economics, and education programs. DIL (Dil) is based on the YDT foreign language test for translation and language programs.
Turkey's Council of Higher Education (YOK) removed the previous threshold scores of 150 for TYT and 180 for AYT/YDT for choosing associate and undergraduate programs. However, you still need a raw score of at least 0.5 in Basic Mathematics or Turkish on the TYT for your score to be calculated. Additionally, minimum rank-of-success requirements still apply for competitive programs such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law, architecture, engineering, and teaching.
The YKS uses negative marking. For every four incorrect answers, one correct answer is subtracted from your raw score. Specifically, your raw score equals the number of correct answers minus one-quarter of the number of wrong answers. Unanswered questions carry no penalty, so leaving a question blank is safer than guessing randomly.
After results are released by OSYM, students submit a preference list of up to 24 university programs ranked in order of priority. OSYM then runs a centralized placement algorithm that matches students to programs based on their placement score, their preference order, and each program's available seats. Higher-ranked preferences are tried first, and you are placed into the highest preference your score qualifies for. Students who are not placed can try again the following year.
