ZIMSEC O-Level results use letter grades tied to percentage ranges: A (75-100%) is a Distinction, B (65-74%) is a Merit, C (50-64%) is a Credit, D (40-49%) is Satisfactory, E (30-39%) is a Fail, and U (below 30%) is Unsatisfactory. Only grades A, B, and C count as official O-Level passes. Grades D and E appear on your school certificate but do not qualify as GCE O-Level passes for advancement to A-Level or university admission.
You need a minimum of five O-Level passes at grade C or better, including English Language, to obtain a full ZIMSEC O-Level certificate. Most students sit between eight and nine subjects, though some private schools allow up to 12 or 13. The five compulsory core subjects typically include English, Mathematics, a science, History, and a technical or vocational subject.
A-Level grades carry point values used for university admission: A = 5 points, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1, and U = 0. Universities calculate your total points from your best three A-Level subjects (maximum 15 points). The percentage thresholds are roughly A (80-100%), B (70-79%), C (60-69%), D (50-59%), and E (40-49%), with anything below 40% graded U (Unclassified/Fail).
Requirements vary by institution and program. At the University of Zimbabwe, cut-off points range from around 6 points for programs like Agriculture, Arts, and Education up to 15 points for highly competitive programs like Law, Actuarial Science, and Biomedical Sciences. Most programs also require at least five O-Level passes including English and Mathematics at grade C or better, plus at least two A-Level passes in subjects relevant to your chosen field.
Science-based university programs in Zimbabwe typically require A-Level passes in specific combinations. Engineering and Architecture generally demand three A-Level passes in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry (or Technical Drawing). Medicine and Health Sciences require Chemistry and Biology. Pharmacy requires Chemistry as a compulsory A-Level. Students planning to pursue these programs should choose their A-Level subject combinations carefully at the start of Form 5.
ZIMSEC uses a combination of written examinations, coursework, and practical assessments depending on the subject. Internal school marking for coursework components is moderated by ZIMSEC to ensure consistency across schools. The final examination papers are set and marked centrally by ZIMSEC. Results are typically released a few months after the examination session, and students can apply for a remark if they believe their grade is incorrect.
